(More customer reviews)A friend of mine gave me an old Singer built into a table. This thing is from the late 60's and possibly made of Detroit steel it's so heavy. The problem being that it came with only one bobbin.
I was afraid I would have to troll the internet for "vintage" bobbins to use with this thing or be doomed to use the same color bobbin thread on all my projects. Thankfully, they're still making this size bobbin.
The plastic on these is a bit thinner then on the "vintage" bobbin, but they work fine in an older machine.

Reliable V95 Digital Velocity 1500-Watt Steam Iron Review

(More customer reviews)Back in July, I purchased this iron as my latest, expensive Rowenta iron started leaking like a sieve (at just over 1 year old). This iron is fantastic! From the first time I used it, it has been great.
The Reliable iron has a separate chamber and heat source for the water that generates the steam. This means that steam is available at a lower heat setting than usual. Also, the steam is consistent - no spitting, leaking or dribbling. The steam can be used with the iron in a vertical position (for steam-pressing a garment). The iron has two steam settings. The higher steam setting puts forth a tremendous amount of steam - just like a steam generator iron but without having a separate water tank to deal with.
The manufacturer does recommend using distilled water (really the only downside). The iron has removable/replaceable filters to extend the life of the iron by filtering out the mineral deposits that can prematurely gunk up an iron.
All in all, this is one terrific iron. I highly recommend it to anyone, especially to anyone who does sewing/quilting. Fantastic iron!

I have bought many irons in my 30 years in business. And have paid large sums of money for some of them.
This iron is the best all around iron on the market today. I don't say that lightly either. It does pull more power with it's heavy duty electric cord, I expect my electric bill will go up slightly now that I use this exclusively on my fabrics..... But the finished product is so much nicer and I get the professional finish I want to have on my handwovens. The added cost is worth the finished product.

(More customer reviews)I'll make it simple: If you are looking for a home-edition garment steamer, your top 2 choices in the marketplace will likely be the Jiffy 2000 and the Rowenta 8100.
I tested both for 10 hours; on a 1 to 10 scale:
Jiffy (Looks = 6; Engineering = 10; handling = 9; craftsmanship = 10).
It looks like a mop bucket on wheels but it performs like a jet engine; every part of this machine from the plate at the bottom of the unit to the steam handle is built for rugged usage.
Rowenta (Looks = 10; Engineering = 5; Handling = 7; crafsmanship = 4).
It looks like a UFO but performs like a Pinto with much less steaming power; it is built as a toddler's toy having most parts made with inexpensive plastic including the watertank base and valve: pull the machine a single foot OR tilt it a mere 1 inch and you will experience a slow-building cascade.
Buy the Rowenta 8100 as a decorative piece to make your closet look good.
Buy the Jiffy 2000 as a garment steamer to make your clothes look good.

While a steam iron eliminates fabric wrinkles and creases with great efficacy, the impact of a heavy soleplate will not do for some delicate and vintage pieces. For such ironing conundrums, Rowenta offers this professional upright steamer. The 1500-watt steamer gently smoothes wrinkles away without the stiffness left by a conventional iron's soleplate.

1) The unit I own takes a long time (several minutes) to heat up. It never really gets hot.
2) It produces minimal steam, water leaks onto the floor while using, the floor remains wet for several minutes after use.
3) The refill light on my unit doesn't work.
4) After using the unit, I wet a paper towel & wiped down over several tiles I had just cleaned using the FS20. The paper towel picked up quit a lot of dirt ... dirt I thought this product was supposed to have removed.
Interesting (at least to me), I received an e-mail from Haan several weeks after purchasing the unit to ask why I hadn't rated the product. When I responded by telling them (Haan) the problems I was having with my new unit, I never heard from them again. In fairness, I can only speak to my experience with the specific product I received. The problem may be applicable only to this unit.

(More customer reviews)Well, I wouldn't consider the yellow, pink, or white to be very metallic, but they are shiny! The rest of the colors are metallic though, and there is a good selection of two of each color. There are two shades of gold, and they are very similar so it might look as if you have four of one color to some people. The picture is right on. The thread looks as if it will be easy to work with. The strands are small and easy to separate. I can't wait to start working with these!
EDIT: Actually, the red/orange/gold colors and the purple that I received are not quite like the picture. The purple is a lot closer to the dark blue shade, the gold colors are a lot closer to each other. (I think maybe the lighting made the darker gold look a little brighter or more yellow than it really is.) The light shade of orange is more like a nice copper. The dark shade of orange is really a reddish color with a hint of orange. And the regular red is more of a maroon. It looks to me as if the rest of the colors are just right in the picture. And the colors are still very nice - with the possible exception of that neon yellow, depending on your taste. I suppose it's also possible that they have more than 13 colors available and just vary what they give to people.

This is supposed to be a repeat process done on a hot iron and it is a slow process that leaves a lot behind. It may work but you would have to be very patient and still it may leave some burn traces behind.
The simple alternative, get a small tube or bottle of FLITZ METAL POLISH and your iron's stainless steel sole will be clean in under 2 minutes. A German invention Flitz has been around for years and is inexpensive and available from your local hardware store or from old reliable Amazon.com.

Bosch Premium Canister Vacuum Cleaner BSG 81380UC Electro Duo XXL HC Review

(More customer reviews)When I thought it was time to replace my trusty Miele White Pearl I looked to Consumer Reports for my 'research'. This was their top-rated unit ever and it came with a HEPA filter which I really wanted. I can weep when I see the price listed here because when I bought it in 2007 it cost over $2000 (CDN). For that price and with that endorsement I was confident it was a sure bet. I was so very wrong. The design was clever but the ergonomics were poor and I simply hated everything about it. Here's why:
* The hose did not rotate on both the handle AND the vacuum ends -- which means a fair bit of time spent fussing and untwisting it. It was awkward and cumbersome in the extreme.
* The "attachments" are all part of the hand unit which seems really clever while in truth all it means is they will require a fair bit of handling to disassemble the lot of them before you can use them and then you have to 'rebuild' them. Your hands will be all over the business ends so if you are fussy about that kind of stuff, and I am, it will bother you. Once you do get them apart, and the one you need attached, you'll find that not one of them is very good at their intended purpose -- which I suspect is a result of the compromises to functionality their questionable origami-design required. (I loved the hygienic simplicity of my Miele where I could flip open the top of the canister with a tap of my toe and all the tools were nicely laid out for easy access and use.)
* The plastic material is cheap! Within 4 months the handle had already cracked. We are very low impact livers and treat our stuff with great care -- that crack occurred with light use and careful handling.
* The cheap plastic holds static! The vacuum head and hose attracts and holds everything I am trying to vacuum up and the stuff just clings. Gross. I had to interrupt vacuuming to vacuum it off but found that in order to have any success I needed to use a damp clothe to wipe it down. Once vacuuming resumed so did the accumulation.
* The release collar on the telescoping extension is crudely designed and difficult to release. I really struggled with this and had to get my husband to help me on a couple of occasions. I am an able-bodied person and this was ridiculous.
I retired it after less than a year of owning it -- it was retired right into the garbage which is what I thought it was. My cleaning lady asked if she could rescue it and was thrilled to have it -- it was out of her price range and she thought she was getting something special. I assured her she was not. I ended up buying one of the new light weight Miele's that had just came out... I love the long cord and the hose that swivels any which way I want -- when I want it to -- and the head is a marvel that swivels freely too and so easily it even goes flat so I can quickly scoot under the furniture! I especially appreciate that I do not have to vacuum my vacuum in order to vacuum.
Because of this debacle, I lost my faith in Consumer Reports and suspect that their criteria must be very different from the end users. Now before I buy I check out the reviews Amazon.com where I can hear from people who actually use the products. I find it's the most reliable indicator, but even if there are raves about a product or brand there's always going to be someone that got a dud, or had a really bad experience, which in this case was me.

Had to move the cord, and getting worse.
It is now going in file 13. My other Black and Decker works great.

I bought this die for use with my new AccuQuilt GO! Fabric Cutter. I'm impressed with quick and easily it cuts fabrics, as well as with the accuracy of the cuts. This die cuts fabric squares that are 3.5" inches on each side; if you quilt with 1/4" inch seams, then that means the finished square is 3" inches on each side. Almost all of my quilting is done with combinations of 3.5" squares, so this die has been a great investment for me.
The die cuts two squares per cut - if you layer the fabric with eight layers (the maximum thickness the AccuQuilt claims to be able to accommodate), that gives you 16 squares per cut. It takes about five minutes to layer the fabric and run it through the machine, so you can cut about 100 squares in half an hour time.
The only complaint I have with this die is that it is a bit wasteful of fabric - I do wish they had made it with less "empty" space on the sides, to allow for tighter cutting, but I suppose if you got creative with your fabric folding it wouldn't be as much of an issue. For myself, I never seem to have enough scraps for scrap quilts, so I'm just being "wasteful" and saving the scraps in my barren scrap basket.
Do note that you will need the GO! 5x10 Cutting Mat to use with this die, as well as the actual AccuQuilt Go fabric cutting machine. I've attached the video I created for my AccuQuilt review to show this die in action.
